Frequently Asked Questions

How many hours should I work to earn .5 credits?

+
-

Students can earn .5 credits for 90 hours of approved work-based learning.

If I have a job, can I leave school early?

+
-

Students who have an approved work-based learning experience can earn credit and may also have early release or late start included in your daily schedule if credits/courses allow. In order to account for early release in your course schedule and credits, students must request early release prior to the start of the semester. We cannot guarantee early release for every student.

Do I find my own job, or does the school do that for me?

+
-

Students are responsible for obtaining their own employment and networking with community business partners. However, we are a resource for students and the community to connect appropriate matches when able. Students can access our digital job board to find available opportunities and contact Mr. Michlig with any questions.

If my graduation credits are complete, can I leave school as early as I want?

+
-

Students are encouraged to continue taking relevant coursework throughout high school in addition to work-based learning experiences if they choose this option. Students who have completed the minimum graduation requirements need to maintain at least 6.0 credits each year and 5.5 credits during their senior year. Additionally, students should not be missing school hours if they are not committed to work during that time during the week.

Release times will be adjusted to meet needed hours:
  • 90 hours/18 weeks = 1 hour of release time
  • 450 hours/18 weeks = 2 hours of release time

Do I have to leave school early in order to earn credit for working?

+
-

No. Students who work evenings and weekends are encouraged to participate in the Career Internship program.

If I find another job after I register with an employer, can I switch jobs or find another job?

+
-

Generally, no. This is most importantly a work-based learning program. If you want to find a job or job-hop, this program would not be for you. If there are issues or concerns with your work-based learning experience, you will need to work through procedural steps with Connect Academy as concerns arise while working with an employer.

If you are having issues at work, immediately Contact: April Kraklow april.kraklow@muskegonorway.org.

DO NOT JUST QUIT, If you are fired/quit, you will no longer have early release from school and will be assigned study halls, and may result in a failing grade.
